Choosing The Best Pet Ramps For Elderly Dogs

As dogs age, many benefit from the added support of a ramp to help them get in and out of the car or navigate steps. Ramps are also commonly used as a preventive measure for breeds prone to arthritis, hip dysplasia, and back problems, and as a temporary aid for dogs recovering from surgery.

When selecting a ramp for your dog, consider their individual abilities. A gentler gradient, or slope, makes it easier for your dog to move up and down safely. We also recommend checking the ramp’s width and weight capacity to ensure it’s suitable for your small, medium, or large dog.

How Ramps Help Your Dog

Dog ramps are designed to provide a smooth, gentle slope for pets when overcoming steps or accessing the car. Allowing dogs to walk up a ramp instead of jumping reduces the pressure placed on their joints from the jump and the impact of landing.

When dogs jump, they use various parts of their body. For instance, their spine flexes, their shoulders extend and their legs flex.

Repeated jumping can place unnecessary stress on a dog’s ligaments, joints, and muscles — and over time, this strain can lead to long-term injury or discomfort. For dogs recovering from surgery, requiring them to jump before they are fully healed can slow down the healing process and increase the risk of injury which can of course be very costly in terms of vet bills.

Ramps can be especially beneficial for dogs prone to back problems, such as Dachshunds, Corgis, and other breeds with long backs and short legs.

What To Look For When Choosing a Dog Ramp

  • Capacity - Check the ramp can support your dogs weight
  • Height you are going up - Measure the vertical height of your step, sofa or the height from the ground to where the ramp will rest. Check the maximum height the ramp is designed to be used at. Note, depending on your dog's abilities, you may require a longer ramp.
  • Ramp Width - Check the usable width of the ramp is suitable for your dog
  • Surface Type - Always look for a non-slip surface and consider your dogs material preferences
  • Portable Design - For portable ramps, check the stored size is suitable for where you wish to store the ramp and the weight of the ramp is manageable if you plan to carry it
  • Easy to Clean - Ensure the ramp is easy to clean if you plan to go on muddy walks
  • Smooth gradient - Check the gradient is a smooth enough slope for your dog based on their abilities

Are Dog Ramps The Best Option For My Dog?

Whilst dog ramps are great for many pooches, if you are unsure, we recommend consulting a vet.

For some dogs with severe mobility problems, a harness or lift may be more suitable.

It is important to ensure your dog is comfortable using the ramp. Dogs should not be forced to use it, as this can create fear and anxiety. We recommend encouraging your dog with treats or a squeaky toy. Start by using the ramp at a lower height to build confidence before transitioning to car boot access.
